You want to paint, but how do you find the time? I've spoken with many artists just like you. Internet forums are literally filled with posts from frustrated emerging artists who dream of quitting their day-jobs to make art full-time. For most of us that's just not realistic. If you're like me, you have to make every minute in the studio count. When you paint in random starts and stops, your methods have to be flexible. And you have to work fast when you don't know how much time will be available to you. Fast & Flexible, Using the Oil Painting Techniques You Already Know for Speed and Results is the book I wrote just for you.In this beautifully illustrated and informative manual, I use my knowledge as both a professional architect and artist to deconstruct the process of oil painting to provide you with an organizing framework that neatly summarizes the best traditional painting practices, from Rembrandt and Velasquez to Chardin and Monet. Transcend Style! No longer do you have to distinguish between Venetian style, Flemish methods, and Impressionist theory. All you need to know is if you're more interested in color or tone and how you prefer to resolve uncertainties. Learn to match painting skills to your vision and temperament. |

Fast & Flexible is not about teaching you a style, but rather teaching you how to choose the techniques for realizing your vision. It does this by presenting you with various options and allowing you to match these with your artistic temperament. As a result your pictures will be stronger and communicate your intentions more clearly. Four Easy Methods... I have organized the various techniques of painting into four basic painting methodologies. You will learn how to match your temperament, aesthetic priorites, and preferred skills with a particular approach and style. |

About Me... My formal education was at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) where I studied architecture. Based on the legacy of the great modernist Mies van der Rohe, IIT's program emphasized the organic nature of design to express the inherent qualities of materials and construction. This way of thinking continues to influence my ideas about fine art and painting. Over 15 years of Painting Experience... My first steps into fine are were at Harold Washington College in Chicago, in 1991. Under the instruction of Nelson Ghorbanian, I learned copperplate engraving, a medium of unforgiving exactness. He later refined my tonal approach at Expressions Graphics, an Oak Park artist cooperative for printmakers. While working at Expressions Graphics, I studied the tonal realism techniques of Australian painter Max Meldrum under the guidance of Dominic Vignola. Later, I supplemented Vignola's training with additional lessons from artist Andy Conklin at the Palette and Chisel Academy in Chicago. Since then, I have studied the work of master painters in museums all across North America and Europe. I have researched the biology of human vision and spent a small fortune experimenting with modern painting materials. My paintings have been display in numerous juried and solo shows and are collected by both public institutions and private collections. Now you too can benefit from my extensive experience. |
